Our commitment

Aargo Brinechem wants this website to be usable by everyone, including people who browse with a screen reader, navigate by keyboard alone, need larger text, or find motion on screen uncomfortable. Accessibility is treated as part of building the site rather than as an afterthought.

Standard we aim for

We aim to meet the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at conformance level AA. WCAG 2.1 is the international standard that explains how to make web content more accessible to people with disabilities, and level AA is the level most commonly adopted for public websites.

We consider this site to be substantially conformant with WCAG 2.1 level AA: it meets the standard except for the limitation set out below. This assessment is based on our own review rather than a formal third-party audit.

What we have done

The measures below are built into the site:

  • Semantic markup. Pages are built from real headings, lists, landmarks and tables, in a logical order, so assistive technology can convey the structure rather than a flat run of text.
  • One clear heading outline. Every page has a single level-one heading and a heading hierarchy that follows the visual one.
  • Keyboard operability. Every link, button, form control, tab and accordion can be reached and operated from the keyboard. The mobile menu keeps focus inside itself while open, closes on Escape and returns focus to the button that opened it; while closed it is removed from the tab order entirely.
  • Visible focus. A clear two-pixel focus ring is drawn around whichever control the keyboard is on.
  • Skip link. The first thing a keyboard user reaches on every page is a “Skip to content” link that jumps past the header navigation.
  • Contrast-checked palette. Text and interface colours are chosen against measured contrast ratios so that body text and small text meet the 4.5:1 minimum, and larger text meets 3:1.
  • Reduced motion respected. Scroll-in animations, smooth scrolling and hover transitions are switched off for visitors whose system is set to reduce motion.
  • Text alternatives. Photographs carry descriptive alternative text; decorative graphics are hidden from assistive technology so they are not announced as noise.
  • Labelled forms. Every field on the enquiry forms has a visible, programmatically associated label; required fields are marked both visually and for assistive technology; and validation errors are announced and linked to the field they concern.
  • Responsive and zoomable. Pages reflow down to a 320-pixel width and to 200% zoom without loss of content or horizontal scrolling, and text can be resized by the browser.
  • Adequate target sizes. Links and buttons, including those in the footer and utility bar, are sized so they can be activated comfortably on a touchscreen.

Known limitations

We are aware of the following, and mention it so you are not caught out by it:

  • The embedded Google Map on the Contact Us page is supplied by Google and rendered inside a frame we do not control, so we cannot guarantee its accessibility or fix problems within it. The same address is written out in full as plain text on the Contact Us page and in the footer of every page, and a “View on Google Maps” link opens the map in its own window, so no information is available only inside the map.

Documents and images supplied by third parties, and any content added after this statement was written, may not have been assessed to the same standard. If you find something, please tell us.

How we test

The site is checked with automated accessibility tooling and by manual review — navigating each page with the keyboard alone, checking the heading and landmark structure, verifying colour contrast against measured ratios, and testing the pages at narrow widths and at increased zoom.

Tell us about a problem

If you have trouble using any part of this website, or need information from it in a different format, please get in touch and tell us the page you were on and what went wrong. We treat accessibility reports as faults and will do our best to put them right, and to give you the information you needed in the meantime.

Please mark your message “Accessibility” so it reaches the right person.
